Reading

We aim to hear the children read at least twice a week in class. We also encourage the children to read daily at home and this forms part of our homework. We want to encourage a love of reading for enjoyment so sharing books at home will help us to achieve this.  We appreciate reading support from our local community.

Our whole class story books in the Autumn term include: The Owl Who Was Afraid of The Dark, The BFG and The Worst Witch.

Your child will be given a set day to take home a school library book, soft toy and the toy's reading diary. This is called Reading at Bedtime, and it has been very successful in encouraging reading for pleasure.

Flash Book Review - during the year, your child will be asked to bring a favourite book to school to discuss with the class.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on a Friday which will include Maths or English tasks, spellings to learn and times tables to practice. It should then be handed in on a Wednesday.

Our topics this year

Autumn Term: Castles and Dragons, and Festivals

Spring Term: Real Life Superheroes and Magical Mapping

During the Autumn Term we have visited Colchester Castle for a historical trip about castles. In December we will enjoy a Christmas experience at Barleylands Farm and also a visit to the Towngate Theatre to see the pantomime 'Dick Whittington'.

We have lots of exciting things planned for the year ahead in Chestnut Class and we will share photos of our journey on this class page with you.
